Viagra: The Wonder Treatment for Erectile Dysfunction

Viagra is a drug created by the company Pfizer with the primary indication of treating erectile dysfunction.

It’s generic name is sildenafil citrate and it’s primary method of action is a vasodilator; mainly a PDE-5 inhibitor.

This drug works similar to different medications used to treat pulmonary hypertension by reversing the effects of vasoconstriction that the body acts on blood vessels. The pharmacodynamics of Viagra are that it is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, which means it blocks the conversion of the enzyme cGMP into GTP, which allows the vasodilation in the veins and arteries in the penis. However, the patient must be sexually aroused in order for the product to kick in. When a person is aroused, their brain released nitric oxide into different veins and arteries in order to synthesize cGMP and cause an erection. If the person is not aroused, then no cGMP will be formed and the drug will not be able to take effect. Because of this effect on blood pressure, Viagra must be carefully monitored in patients who take medications that cause a drop in blood pressure, such a nitrates.

Viagra’s original indication was used to treat high blood pressure and angina; however the side effects of the early medication were not positive and it caused headaches and muscle aches. Its original side effects also indicated longer lasting erections, which the company built on to make the product that it is today.

All forms of the drug are sold as oral tablets and are dosed from 25, 50, and 100 milligrams.

Patients are often instructed to use the medication at most once per day, from 30 minutes to 1 hour before sexual intercourse. There is also a food interaction with this drug, so taking food could delay its onset of action. Viagra is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to sildenafil, as contained in the tablet. Hypersensitivity reactions have been reported which include rash and urticaria.

The market for Viagra in Australia vastly contrasts that of the United States.

The Australian market sells the medication in four dosed packets, which cost about .20 per packet to patients who are diagnosed with erectile dysfunction, compared to the United States ~ per tablet. Australian citizens can also buy packets without a prescription through the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme for around -82 per packet, while paying more in order to buy it over the internet.

The Australian government is currently planning to allow the sale of Viagra to patients without a prescription in order combat the growing counterfeit Viagra numbers within the country.

The United Kingdom allowed a bill to pass to allow the sale of Viagra without a prescription, which brought its counterfeiting numbers down dramatically. In a study done in Australia, it has shown that the number of PDE inhibitor users has increased dramatically throughout the past few years, from 4 percent to 7 percent. With the growing popularity of erectile dysfunction treatment drugs such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, efforts to combat the growing counterfeit market within the country should be increased and mobilized in order to protect consumers from taking counterfeit and potentially dangerous drugs.

Is there an age requirement for Viagra? Can a teenager use it? Are there any negative long term effects of using Viagra?

I’m a 31 year old male with friends within my age group by 5 years. Within the last year I have seen an increasing use of Viagra to take care of performance issues in bed. I have never taken it. But friends and colleagues have handed me some Viagra pills on numerous occasions. Which I find is a strange situation anyways. Where does the conversation go from there?

I’m 43 years old and I struggle with erectile dysfunction. It was getting to the point where my wife was getting more frustrated with our love life each passing day, and even affected our relationship. I am now taking Viagra, and our relationship couldn’t be any better!

I am a 20 year-old female and since I do not use Viagra or have no use for it, I don’t really have an opinion on it, but I can imagine that it is a very helpful product for those who need it.
